Your match plan

An academy challenge restricts how you build the squad. It differs from the youth-development guide, which explains a pathway without requiring you to refuse outside recruitment.

Set the challenge rules

Choose an eligibility rule before starting. A strict version admits only players produced by the club during the career; a gentler version also keeps players already present on day one. Decide whether returning graduates qualify and record the rule instead of changing it after an attractive opportunity appears.

Write an emergency policy for positions the intake does not cover. You might permit an existing reserve, accept an awkward positional adaptation or allow one explicitly recorded exception. These are optional community-style rules proposed by our editors, not a game mode that FM27 enforces.

Choose the starting project

Audit every position across the senior and development squads. Mark where no credible alternative exists and which players would be asked to learn a different responsibility. Avoid selling all experienced cover before seeing whether the remaining squad can fulfil basic competition and registration requirements.

Barcelona and Stuttgart provide different editorial starting contexts in our club briefings. Their inclusion does not establish a particular FM27 youth-facility score or intake strength. Inspect the selected database and choose the actual job only after checking the resources and obligations shown there.

Review the project without rewriting its rules

Track opportunities alongside outcomes: appearances in a suitable role, development objectives reviewed and responsibilities that still lack cover. A prospect with a high reported PA is not a guaranteed first-team player, and a public sample does not represent your future intake.

At each season end, record the players retained, the exceptions used and the next difficult position to cover. If the challenge becomes unplayable, adjust the written rules openly or start a different project. Do not silently relabel an external signing as an academy product to protect a story the evidence no longer supports.

Keep an eligibility register separate from the development shortlist. Record when a player entered the club, which written rule admits them and whether an exception was used. This avoids later uncertainty about a returning graduate or a player who was already in the reserves when the challenge began.
