Pick a challenge you want to solve repeatedly. Familiarity, expectations and the development pathway matter more than a fashionable club name.

A familiar club makes a useful first career
If this is your first Football Manager career, familiarity can reduce the number of things you need to learn at once. Knowing the players helps you recognise whether the starting tactic suits their strengths, while understanding the club’s competitions gives context to its objectives. Inspect the board expectations and the actual squad in the new game before choosing.
We do not publish invented starting budgets or a ranked table of club difficulty. Those details need to be checked against a particular FM27 database version. Instead, choose the kind of decision-making you enjoy: immediate results, gradual rebuilding, youth development or adapting a limited squad. There can be several good clubs for the same goal.
A development project needs a pathway
For a youth-focused save, examine the opportunities available to younger players and the competition for their positions. A club associated with developing talent in real football is an interesting starting point, but its reputation is not a substitute for reviewing the game’s own setup. Consider how the first team and development squads might connect.
The official training material separates individual growth from senior team preparation. A development career therefore involves more than signing promising names. Think about the responsibilities those players could eventually fill, the staff who support them and how much change the senior squad can absorb while still meeting its objectives.
A lower-league challenge rewards clarity
A smaller club can offer a satisfying career because each recruitment and tactical choice has a clear purpose. It can also leave less margin for an unsuitable plan. The official discussion of Tactical Complexity highlights that demanding instructions may be harder for some squads to execute, making a simple and well-understood approach worth considering.
Before committing to a long save, check that the competition you want is available and review its rules inside the game. Our game-systems page links to official announcements about newly licensed leagues, but licensing is not a complete list of playable competitions. Choose a club whose constraints interest you enough to work through a difficult run, rather than one whose appeal depends on an unverified prediction of easy success.
