Start with the squad you have. Build one coherent tactic, prepare for the next match, and recruit only after identifying a specific gap.

Choose a manageable first save
For a first career, choose a club whose players and expectations you already understand. Familiarity makes it easier to judge whether a poor result comes from your instructions, the opposition or a limitation in the squad. Before advancing, read the board expectations and examine the competitions you will play in. The suggestions here are an editorial planning framework, rather than a tested promise of results in the final release.
Review your squad before buying anyone. Check which positions have a credible starter and an alternative, which players are unavailable, and which contracts need attention. Write down the most urgent problems. An attractive signing is not necessarily the answer if the team actually lacks cover elsewhere. Keep a separate list of changes that can wait until you have watched the existing players.
Give the team one clear idea
Build a starting shape that fits the available players. A familiar formation is useful because you can explain each player’s job and notice when it is not being done. Resist adding every instruction that sounds positive: a coherent, achievable plan is easier to diagnose than a collection of competing demands.
Sports Interactive describes Tactical Effectiveness as connecting player ability, understanding, buy-in and next-match information. This makes preparation part of the tactic itself. Read the feedback in the game instead of treating a formation diagram as a complete solution. The formation board on our tactics page is a teaching illustration; it is not an imported game preset.
Use the first week to learn
Start with staff advice and check the responsibilities assigned to your backroom team. Delegate the areas you are not ready to manage, then review their output. In training, align preparation with the next fixture and keep an eye on the load across the coming weeks. Individual development and team preparation serve different purposes, so do not assume that one automatically covers the other.
Watch enough of your opening matches to see where possession is lost and where opponents find space. Change one part of the plan at a time and keep brief notes on the effect. Our supplied creator preview shows several different tactical approaches working in an early build; that is a reason to experiment, not evidence of a single unbeatable system. Review the final game and its patch version before making long-term conclusions.
